  3. Configuration of Linux Slackware INN_PKG for use with DEMON INTERNET SERVICES

  11. This was initially flung together on the request of two Linux/Demon users who
  12. requested information on how to get INN_PKG working with Demon; hence I have
  13. aimed it at the beginner.
  14.  
  15. For those who are a little baffled, INN stands for InterNetNews and is the
  16. up-and-coming news agent. It is used instead of CNews and is designed to use
  17. the NNTP (Net News Transfer Protocol), rather than being patched to use it
  18. (as CNews is).
  19.  
  20. This setup is being carried out using INN v1.4 with Slackware v2.2.0, although
  21. it should work fine with all later versions. As this is not meant as a
  22. replacement for the packages by Karl London (Demon-v3.4 currently) or John
  23. Phillips (slack2.1.0), it would be beneficial to read through and install
  24. the relevant parts from one of these (ie. the DIP/PPP scripts and mail setup).
  25. As a result, I have only included the parts needed for News setup.

  27. The reasons that I used INN instead of CNews are as follows:
  28. * Once setup, INN is _very_ easy to administer.
  29. * Using NOV (News OverView) threading, all NOV-compatible news readers can be
  30.   used, without separate threading details.
  31. * The INN_PKG in Slackware is _really_ well setup and described.
  32.  
  33. Once INN has been setup with your node-name and news server, etc, all that is
  34. required is a shell script auto-run at Linux bootup and a cron job run every
  35. night. Admin details are setup to be emailed to root, although this is easily
  36. changed.

  38. Please bear in mind that you may need quite a lot of space for downloading
  39. news articles. As a guideline, I subscribe to 23 newsgroups (several of which
  40. are pretty dormant), and I have approximately 8-10Mb used (including the NOV
  41. database).

  43. The threading allows you to read articles on the same subject, one
  44. after another, rather than reading all articles in date order. The database
  45. for threading uses up approximately 10% extra.

  47. That's about it for an intro. Sorry if any of this seems a bit disjointed.
  48. Please let me know of spelling errors, unclear points, etc ... and, most
  49. importantly, any setup errors with this package.

  54. Note - to those people who want the permissions and users correct (hopefully)
  55. for all of the config files I have put in this package, detar the package
  56. again, using:

  58. tar xzpvf Slack-INN-v???.tar.gz
  59.  
  60. (the "p" option tries to match all the permissions, so remember to detar
  61. using root user!) The permissions should be correct if you are installing
  62. this, as part of the Slack-help package, using the Slack-Demon script.
